One woman has gone down, a letter still pinched between her fingers, and the other catches her under the arms wearing a look of pure alarm. Christoffer Wilhelm Eckersberg drew it in the high waisted gowns and flat sandals of the Empire years, which is exactly the period he trained in under Jacques Louis David. The Danish Golden Age had a real appetite for bad news arriving by post. Whatever that letter said, it landed.
