A tiger stands behind the vertical bars of a wooden cage, printed in 1860, when foreign menageries were among the first things to arrive in a newly opened Japan. Most Japanese tigers of the previous two centuries were painted from pelts and rumor. This one was drawn from an actual animal, and the bars are the reason.
