An Indian rhinoceros clad in what looks like riveted plate armor, complete with a bonus little horn on its back. Albrecht Dürer never saw the animal: he worked from a written description and a sketch of one that arrived in Lisbon in 1515. The result is gloriously wrong, wildly famous, and arguably the most successful animal portrait ever made sight unseen.
