The Emperor of China sets sail in wool, silk and metallic thread, woven at the Beauvais royal manufactory in the early 1700s. The Story of the Emperor of China series fed a European craze for chinoiserie: a fantasy of China dreamed up by French designers who had never been anywhere near it.
