A weathered shed leans behind a white picket fence while sunflowers push up in front of it, the whole thing built from short choppy strokes of green, ochre and pale blue. Van Gogh painted it on the slopes of Montmartre in 1887, during the Paris years when he was teaching himself colour and the Impressionists were still news to him. Not a swirling night sky in sight, just a scruffy allotment on the edge of the city and a great deal of paint.
