Out of near total blackness a giant lurches forward, eyes blown wide, cramming the body of his own child into his mouth. Goya painted it straight onto the wall of his house outside Madrid, one of the fourteen Black Paintings he made for no audience but himself and never titled, never exhibited, never explained. It was cut from the plaster and moved to canvas after his death. The least decorative thing in this catalog, and possibly the most honest.
