Saint George in shining armor takes on a dragon in tempera and gold leaf on panel, painted in Barcelona in the 1430s. Bernat Martorell was the leading painter in Catalonia, where George is the patron saint and something of a local celebrity. Knight, horse, monster, rescue: the original fantasy blockbuster, five centuries before the special effects.
