A woman lies back across a blue and white plaid throw, her body one long warm sweep of ochre, rose and green, her face turned away into the shadow at the lower edge. Bonnard signed this one in the upper corner, and it shows every one of his habits: the tipped up viewpoint, the color doing all the drawing, the intimacy that never quite hardens into a pose. Sunlit, sensuous, and built entirely out of paint.
