A woman sits for her portrait in oil, painted and signed by Jean-Léon Gérôme in 1851 when he was still in his twenties. Gérôme would go on to become one of the most powerful academic painters in France and a famously stern teacher, the kind who considered polish non negotiable. Even this early, the finish is impeccable and the sitter is giving nothing away.
