A rabbit sits for its portrait in this surimono, the privately commissioned, deluxe prints Japanese poetry circles traded as greetings. Fittingly, 1867 was a Year of the Rabbit, so Yabu Chosui's sitter was very much the celebrity of the season. Surimono were made to impress, with fine paper and careful printing for a small audience. A dignified bunny for anyone who takes their bunnies seriously.
