Pheasant Caught by a Snake

A snake has wrapped itself around a pheasant and the bird is still upright, head turned, tail fanned into the bamboo behind it. Kyosai painted this on silk in near-monochrome, which keeps the whole thing at a strange remove. Nobody in the picture appears to be panicking.
