An odalisque, the reclining harem figure that nineteenth century French painters returned to with suspicious enthusiasm, signed and dated by Jules Lefebvre in 1874. Lefebvre was a pillar of the academic Salon and taught generations of students at the Académie Julian. Polished, sensual and extremely of its era, which is to say a lot of Orientalist fantasy dressed up as respectability.
