Maruru, or Offerings of Gratitude, carved by Paul Gauguin for his Noa Noa Suite after his first stay in Tahiti, then printed in 1921 by his son Pola. Gauguin gouged and scratched his blocks with deliberate roughness, which upset the polished print crowd of the day. Rough hewn, moody and printed in black ink, it looks like a woodcut with secrets.
