The Chinese acrobat and magician Long Tack Sam stands in a cream silk robe worked with dragons and roundels, framed by pale blue pagodas and a slim bamboo border, under his own name in jagged gold letters. It came off the presses of the Hamburg lithography house of Adolph Friedländer, which turned out thousands of posters for circuses and conjurers and knew precisely how to sell a mystique. He was one of the biggest draws in vaudeville, and the poster never doubts it for a second.
