Golden emblems glow out of a dark ground, a caduceus, the scales of justice, and a tangle of ornate symbols, in this allegorical painting attributed to Karel van Mander around 1600. Van Mander was the Dutch Vasari, a painter and biographer steeped in classical learning, and this dense little puzzle box of meaning shows it. Catnip for anyone who likes their art esoteric.
