A gorilla in a spiked helmet stamped Militarism lurches out of the water onto the American shore, a bloodied club labeled Kultur in one fist and a swooning woman in the other, all under enormous orange letters. Harry Ryle Hopps drew it for the San Francisco army recruiting district around 1917, and subtlety was plainly not the assignment. One of the most notorious images in American wartime propaganda, and a masterclass in making a point with one very large ape.
