A cuckoo and blooming azaleas, from the small format bird and flower prints Hokusai designed in the mid 1830s. In Japanese poetry the cuckoo's call marks early summer, so this is basically a seasonal announcement in print form. Hokusai was in his seventies by this point and still showing everybody how it was done. Fresh, lively and an easy win for plant and bird people alike.
