A canary and a peony share the page, two crowd pleasers in one small print from Hokusai's bird and flower designs of about 1834. The peony was the king of flowers in East Asian art, so the canary is in very good company. Hokusai signed these as an old man and drew them like a young one. Bright, delicate, and a reliable cure for a gloomy wall.
