About this print

William F. Cody sits a pale spotted horse in fringed buckskin and a wide brimmed hat, reins loose, looking every inch the myth he was busy selling. Rosa Bonheur painted him at her chateau near Fontainebleau in 1889, after his Wild West show stampeded through the Paris Exposition and she went out to sketch the horses. Note that the horse gets the better lighting. She was the most famous animal painter in Europe and she knew exactly what she was there for.
