A headless Saint John leans out of a prison window, blood arcing to the ground, while one man stoops for the head and the executioner calmly sheathes his sword. Giovanni di Paolo painted this in Siena in the 1450s, when gilded storytelling still trumped anatomical realism. The result is a gory panel with the cheerful color sense of a picture book, which is honestly the best kind of gore.
